Art, comedy, music, oh my! Here’s how to live it up this weekend

With Restaurant Week just a few days away, don't waste your weekend on dining out or doing the same old, same old. Instead, check out some of these non-foodie events.

“Betwixt and Between”

Anna von Gwinner, an artist and architect long known for her abilities to create a visual and spatial union between architecture and the moving image, has been commissioned to create a new installation by the College of Arts + Architecture in the new UNC Charlotte Center City Building.  This site-specific video installation, “Betwixt and Between,” will command viewing from urban onlookers as it projects from the gallery in two directions: out into 9th street and into the Center City Building lobby. The exhibition opens with a reception at 6 p.m. and artist lecture at 6:30 p.m. on January 19 and will feature a performance by Fresh Ink starting at 8:15 p.m.

Blumenthal Performing Arts Center

There are so many great celebrity events going on at BPAC this weekend, we decided to feature them all! Follow the specific links for details on show times, tickets, etc.

  • Directed by Jerry Seinfeld, Long Story Short allows Colin Quinn to focus his “articulate brand of comedy” on the demise of empires, including our own. More than standup comedy, Long Story Short is a hilarious blend of incisive observation, sharp commentary, and Colin’s channeling of the personalities of the past. From Socrates to Snooki, Quinn is at his satirical best, taking on the attitudes, appetites and bad habits that toppled the world’s most powerful nations. Long Story Short proves that throughout human history, the joke has always been on us.
  • Over the course of his career, Travis Tritt, has delighted fans and disarmed critics by exploring his deep love of hardcore country, flashing an ability and affinity for bluegrass, revealing unexpected sensitivity as a balladeer, winning respect as a formidable songwriter and, most emphatically, drawing widespread recognition as one of the finest vocalists the genre has ever known. A two-time Grammy winner, singer/songwriter Tritt has sold 25 million albums and performed for standing-room-only crowds coast to coast.
  • Appearing on stage with a stool, a mic and a can of Diet Pepsi, Paula Poundstone is famous for her razor-sharp wit and spontaneity. Poundstone continues to be one of the foremost comics working today. Her ability to create humor on the spot is legendary; she is masterful at improvising with the crowd through her casual air, impeccable timing and razor-sharp wit. As one critic stated, “Poundstone has a rare talent.  A refreshing anti-celebrity: warm, gracious, genuine.  If you’re intelligent, philosophical comedy you’ll love Paula Poundstone.”
