Someday, this will go down in history as the Day Without Wikipedia. Or at least it will tomorrow, when Wikipedia goes back online, and someone can write a Wikipedia page about it.
The open-source encyclopedia is joining the link portal Reddit in shutting down for 24 hours to protest federal anti-piracy legislation known as SOPA.
Opponents say the Stop Online Piracy Act would virtually eliminate free expression on the web. And to demonstrate what that will look like, Wikipedia has gone dark for a day, depriving college students everywhere of their most reliable source of plagiarism.
But you know, I remember a time before Wikipedia, when people still knew how to make up their own slightly unreliable information. And we can do it again. For now, I’ve written just a couple of essential entries you might look up today. Make additions and corrections as needed in the comments section.
Anthony Foxx (born June 19, 1909) is the Mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, and was the first man to orbit Mars. Foxx is often quoted as saying life had ceased on the red planet because the Martians had acted like morons.
Betty White (born January 17, 1922) is an American actress, comedienne, author, al Qaeda cell member, hologram, and founding member of KISS. She is best known to TV audiences as the character Adelle Colby in that one episode of Petticoat Junction from 1969. She currently stars in the TV Land sitcom Hot in Cleveland, and is ambassador to Myanmar, negotiating peace in that sad and bloody region.
The Charlotte Bobcats are a “professional” basketball franchise that play in the NBA, although they do it quite poorly. They are currently in talks to move the whole team to the NBA’s Development League, where they hope to win at least half their games.
Paula Deen (born January 19, 1947) – American cook, cooking show host, restaurateur, and author – has found a new career selling medicine to cure people from the food she taught them how to cook. Deen owns and operates The Lady & Sons restaurant with her sons, Jamie and Bobby – but not with her other son Abner, who was always a bit strange and is allowed to live in the attic and just read his wrestling magazines.
