If he keeps playing like he did Saturday night, Kemba Walker won't have to plead for more playing time.
If you like sitting around on your couch all day and watching sports, this past weekend was a good one for you. There was college basketball starting at noon on Saturday, the Bobcats Saturday night, and four NFL playoff games spread over the two days. Ah, the life.
To top it all off, the Bobcats actually got a win! The team’s 112-100 win over Golden State on Saturday snapped the team’s six-game losing streak. Sure, it was only the team’s third win of the season, but at least it’s something they can build on (maybe).
Rookie forward Kemba Walker took advantage of the first start of his career by scoring 23 points while grabbing 4 rebounds, dishing out 5 assists, recording 2 steals and 1 block in 39 minutes. Not too shabby at all. Gerald Henderson (26 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists) had another nice game, while Byron Mullens (20 points, 7 rebounds) chipped in as well.
But Walker was the real story. The 21-year-old rookie from Connecticut deserved the start on Saturday night, after impressing against the Detroit Pistons on Friday night, a game in which he scored 16 points in 23 minutes. His play on Saturday night may get him a few more starts in the near future.
The Bobcats start this week with a 2 pm home game against the Cleveland Cavaliers today, followed by away trips to Orlando (Tuesday), Chicago (Saturday) and New Jersey (Sunday).
On College Basketball
Davidson just keeps rolling along. The Wildcats’ 83-79 win on Saturday over Appalachian State ran the team’s season record to 12-4 and 6-0 in the Southern Conference. That gave the team its fifth straight win as it heads into the last 30 days or so of the regular season.
Davidson is scoring a heck of a lot of points – 79.6 per game, to be exact, which ranks the tam as the 16th best offense in Division I. They’ve scored less than 70 points just three times this season, two of which resulted in losses. The Wildcats host Charleston (12-5) this Thursday.
The Charlotte 49ers fought hard Saturday against a real good St. Louis team, but fell just short, dropping the game 68-67. It wasn’t a bad performance by the team, which moves to 9-7 on the season, 2-2 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. St. Louis, after all, is 14-4 on the year. Still, those are the types of games you’d love to see the 49ers pull out, especially as they try to make a run in the conference.
Unlike Davidson, Charlotte is having trouble scoring (68.4 per game – 174th overall), and it’s a major reason why they haven’t been able to stay consistent. They hope to turn it around this week starting Wednesday when they host lowly Kennesaw State (3-15).
